Voyage of The Vikings
June 10 - 22, 2008

| 12-Day
Voyage of The Vikings |
Roundtrip
Southampton, England |
For
sheer drama, few regions can compare to Northern Europe. The amazing cliffs
of the North Cape, Europe's northernmost point, or the awe-inspiring fjords
of Norway. Sail there with Queen Victoria, and you'll experience the region
from a decidedly European perspective -- the way it was meant to be seen. |
| Tuesday, June 10 - Board Ship
in Southhampton, England |
This
is Cunard's home port, part of seafaring legend. Simply start your holiday
in style with a glass of champagne on deck aboard one of the most famous
ocean liners in the world. London's fascination is its variety - history,
pageantry and tradition mix with the modern, eccentric and avant-garde,
offering something for everyone. Tour Winsor and Stonehenge, or go on a
shopping spree at Harrods via Rolls-Royce complete with uniformed chauffeur. |
| Wednesday, June 11 - Cruising
North Sea |
Visions
of Vikings on grand sailing ships are sure to cross your mind. Herring and
sardines are the mainstay of many a fishing community on the blustery North
Sea. Oil rigs rear up from nowhere to remind the observer that fossil fuels
are found here, too. |
| Thursday, June 12 - Bergen,
Norway |
Bergen
is historic and grand, yet full of charm and atmosphere. Wander along the
city's narrow paths and alleyways, taste the fresh seafood at the Fish Market
and hear Edvard Griegs's music performed at his home, Trollhaugen. Take
the Fløibanen, or the cable car to one of the seven mountains surrounding
Bergen. Enjoy the views or go hiking. Other musts include the old wharf
area Bryggen, the Aquarium, the city's art treasures, Old Bergen or partake
in one of the many festivals. |
| Friday, June 13 - Cruising the
North Sea |
| Saturday, June 14 - Tromsø,
Norway |
Tromsø
is known as the "Gateway to the Arctic," 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
Tromsø is also known as the Paris of the North because of it's cafés
and restaurants. Sample cuisine that carries the aroma of locally-caught
seafood and exotic spices. The heroes of the day, the polar explorers, exploited
the local knowledge and experience to their advantage, to set off on daring
expeditions to the far North. Today, Tromsø is a center for education,
research and culture in the North. The islands around Tromsø are
characterized by enterprising fishing villages, with exports worth millions
around the world, and by incredible and unspoiled isolated skerries, teeming
with bird life and tens of thousands of years of history. Along the fjords
that stretch for miles are luxuriant forests and green pastures, protected
by the high peaks and fed by glaciers. |
| Sunday, June 15 - Honningsåvg,
Norway |
The
world's northernmost village, the gateway to the North Cape, is a completely
modern fishing harbor set in a land of forests, fjord waters, and crashing
waterfalls, everything bathed in summer by the eerie light of the midnight
sun. |
| Monday, June 16 - Cruising the
North Sea |
| Tuesday, June 17 - Trondheim,
Norway |
The
downtown area is dense and compact and easy to explore on foot. The focal
point of the town is Torvet, the Market Square, overflowing with vegetables,
fruit, flowers and souvenirs. From this point you can see many of Trondheim's
most important tourist attractions: Nidaros Cathedral, Munkholmen islet,
King Harald's residence in Trondheim, and Fort Kristiansten Festning. Theater,
concerts and exhibitions for every taste are abound. Intimate pubs and cafes
lie side by side with unique continental restaurants serving delicious meals.
You may enjoy nature and tranquility in the beautiful hills and forests
of Bymarka. And surely no other city can offer a visitor such an opportunity
to go salmon fishing in the city center on a warm summer day! |
| Wednesday, June 18 - Hellesylt,
Norway |
Tiny
Hellesylt is full of gorgeous fjord scenery and steep, waterfall-bedecked
cliffs that tower above the town. Set out through farmland and past
mountain lakes. Walk to Briksdal glacier, the largest glacier in continental
Europe. Savor a Norwegian lunch, tour along the shore of emerald colored
Lake Stryn, or climb the narrow valley for a magnificent view of the
valley far below. Or stay on board the ship for scenic cruising of Geirangerfjord
for breathtaking scenery. This is Norway's most photographed attraction.
|
| Wednesday, June 18 - Geiranger,
Norway |
Geiranger
is a picturesque fjord town nestled in a crook of winding, namesake Geirangerfjord.
Glimpse the waterfalls known as the Seven Sisters and see abandoned mountain
farmlets grasping the rugged hillside. Tour through high snow-covered mountains
and lovely green valleys. Visit a 300-year-old farm, enjoy an introduction
to the art of cheesemaking, or glide along the steep fjord walls in a kayak.
Visit the Norwegian Fjord Center, the Fjord Farms exhibit or the Avalanche
Experience. |
| Thursday, June 19 - Olden/Nordfjord,
Norway |
Home
to the Norwegian Glacier Museum that explores the world of glaciers, from
their formation to their impact on Earth's evolving landscape. Pause for
a photo opportunity of the wild and desolate Utvik mountain country. Jostedalsbreen
National Park is home to the last remaining ice sheet in Europe. Stretching
over 37 miles in length, this remnant of the ice age is divided into three
major arms and is over 1312 feet deep in certain sports. Marvel in the Bøyabreen
Glacier, the arm of the mighty Jostedals ice sheet that descends into an
extremely narrow valley. The road to Fjaerlands leads through a tunnel built
under the glacier. Hike to the face of Kjenndal Glacier or cruise the turquoise
waters of Lake Lovatn. |
| Friday, June 20 - Stavanger,
Norway |
In
a country generally known as a winter wonderland, Stavanger - with its maritime
climate - is green all year round. Endless sandy beaches front the North
Sea and deep fjords cuts into the mountainous areas just east of Stavanger.
Top picks for visitors include Old Stavanger, St. Svithun Cathedral, Norsk
Hermetikk museum (museum for canned goods), Sola beach, and the Archeological
Museum. There are many exciting restaurants and shops here sure to delight
your senses. |
| Saturday, June 21 - Cruising
the North Sea |
| Sunday, June 22 - Southhampton,
England - Disembark |
| The
Ship |
Queen Victoria |
Take
your place in history and be among the first to experience the unveiling
of the elegant Queen Victoria in her Maiden year. As you embark, you will
encounter the dramatic three-tier Grand Lobby, whose magnificent staircase
and eye-catching artwork offers a lavish taste of life aboard. Queen Victoria's

not only the specialty but also of all additional, related disciplines which
may impact it.
PROGRAM
PURPOSE:
The practitioner
of anesthesiology must possess the scientific background for clinical practice;
maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of not only the specialty but also of all
additional, related disciplines which may impact it; maintain an up-to-the-minute
armamentarium of knowledge and skills for the selection and use of complex equipment,
pharmacological agents and procedures necessary for the provision of quality
patient care; manage self and colleagues to function toward common goals in
the clinical setting, the clinical and educational institutions, and the community
in which the practice resides; serve as an expert in matters involving health
care delivery; serve as an informed manager of clinical and educational services
provided, including the acquisition and distribution of resources necessary
in meeting professional goals; and provide assistance with and support of other
service providers, departments, institutions and organizations dependent upon
the professional expertise of the practitioner. Presentations are designed to
facilitate the physician and nurse specialist and other providers maintaining
skills of the same kind to review and update knowledge and abilities in one
or more of these areas vital to the practicing professional.
OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Discuss the
pertinent physical and behavioral sciences - to include but not be limited to
advanced anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry, physics, psychology,
and social sciences -- as they impact and are affected by the planning, delivery
and monitoring of anesthesia and related services inherent in the anesthesia
profession.
Explain the selection, dosing considerations with methods of administration, safe use, and
contraindications and precautions of presented pharmacological agents through the understanding of
their physico-chemical properties, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, updated uses and more
recently developed additional, related, similar drugs.
Outline comprehensive management plans for the group of patients discussed, whether related in age,
physical status, cultural background, invasive procedure, anesthetic or analgesic requirements, clinical
setting, adverse reactions, and/or goals of care.
Discuss the principles of safety and asepsis in the performance of anesthetic procedures and
administrations, equipment use and other applications encountered during the provision of anesthesia
and analgesia whether in the surgical unit, the labor and delivery suite, the pain management clinic or
other more remote location of anesthetizing services.
Discuss the incorporating, into practice, the appropriate recommendations and/or requirements of
pertinent external organizations, institutions and professional groups -- recognized as serving as the
authority for and/or holding the responsibility to compile and approve such tenets -- in the provision of
anesthesia and related services, whether medical, legal, philosophical, ethical, or health care
management standards.
Describe the new techniques in the clinical setting of the participant.
