What are your responsibilities in today's changing health care practice?

The Nevada State Board of Nursing requires all Registered and Licensed Practical Nurses to receive 4 CEC "relating to the medical consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction."

The Nevada Board of Medical Examiners require that all Medical Doctors obtain 4 CME 1 hours in Bioterrorism as well as 2 CME 1 hours in Medical Ethics prior to their next medical license renewal.

This course meets these requirements.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is designed for Physicians, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses and other medical care providers who must maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of not only their specialty, but also of additional related issues which may impact the general medical community.

PROGRAM PURPOSE:
To introduce the epidemiology, diagnostic techniques, management and preventative measures related to the use of weapons of mass destruction, mainly nuclear, biological and chemical agents.

This seminar is designed to highlight the unique features of the management of casualties from nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. This seminar illustrates the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of NBC agents and measures needed for preparation of hospitals and health care providers to deal with the threat of terrorist attacks utilizing NBC agents.

Management of casualties from incidents involving the deliberate use of NBC agents is a novel discipline of medicine not covered in usual medical school curricula. The material presented in this seminar will attempt to bridge the gap and provide a unique opportunity for the participants.

OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Describe the unique challenges of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) terrorism for first responders and hospital personnel.

Understand the acute health effects from radiation contamination and exposure.

Explain the principles of self-patient rescue, triage, and transportation of radiation casualties.

Describe the various types of biological and chemical warfare agents and recognize the signs and symptoms of exposure.

Describe how to properly manage and treat infectious victims.

List the agents which are a risk for secondary transmission and how to protect against this spread using personal protective equipment.

Develop Preparedness Plan for individual department as well as entire hospital.

Review needed equipment, staffing requirements, facility inventory.

Comprehend the ethics involved in resuscitation, DNR orders, Informed Consent, and End of Life issues.

The combined courses meets the requirements of the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners for 4 CME 1 hours in Bioterrorism and the 2 CME 1 hours in Medical Ethics as well as the Nevada Board of Nursing Bioterrorism Continuing Education Requirement.

The 2003 Nevada legislature passed Assembly Bill 250, which requires that several types of health care professionals, including physicians and nurses, take four hours of continuing education "relating to the medical consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction."

If your Nevada MD, RN or LPN license expires after December 31, 2007, four of the 30 continuing education credits required for your renewal must be earned in a bioterrorism course that meets the Bill's requirements.
