PORTS OF CALL
| Saturday, December 4 - Board Ship in San
Diego, California |
With
its constant warm and sunny weather, palm trees, and Spanish architecture,
San Diego, the nation's seventh largest city, is well established
as a favorite vacation destination. This sparkling waterfront city
pulses with high energy attractions. Old Town San Diego dates back
to 1769 and includes many Spanish period buildings and a Mexican bazaar.
The Embarcadero walkway winds around to Seaport Village, a waterfront
shopping and dining complex that recreates the atmosphere of California
in the 1800s. Visit the windjammer Star of India at the Maritime Museum
and stop by the naval open houses. A harbor cruise will yield a view
of the skyline, naval installations, and ships. Tour boats take on
passengers at the foot of Broadway at Harbor Drive. Enjoy the wide
choice of shopping and dining in the Gaslamp Quarter, a National Historic
District, or Horton Plaza, located downtown. Sprawling and beautiful,
Balboa Park offers theaters, sports facilities and a complex of museums,
including the San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Man, San
Diego Natural History Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego
Aerospace Museum and the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater & Science
Center. Also in Balboa Park, the Old Globe Theatre produces Shakespearean
and contemporary drama. The San Diego Zoo is one of the world's greatest.
This tropical garden zoo has thousands of animals, many of them rare.
The zoo's attractions include the bioclimatic habitats Polar Bear
Plunge, Hippo Beach, Gorilla Tropics, Sun Bear Forest, and Tiger River,
as well as two giant pandas from the People's Republic of China. The
San Diego Wild Animal Park, operated by the Zoo at a location north
of the city, offers a quiet monorail ride through its 2,100-acre preserve
where endangered and rare animals roam freely. At Mission Bay you
can enjoy aquatic sports or simply take in the fresh air as you delight
in the more than 20 miles of white-sand beaches. |
| Sunday-Monday, December 5-6 - At sea |
Enjoy
the award winning services of this luxurious Holland America ship.
On board life unfolds effortlessly at a more gracious pace. Have breakfast
in bed, aromatherapy in the Ocean Spa, sit with a good book, play
bingo, work out in the fitness room with an ever-changing ocean view,
see and buy great works of art. Try your luck in the casino, duty-free
shop at great prices, sample the most extensive menu at sea in the
elegant dining room or go casual in the Lido room. Enjoy award winning
production spectaculars, variety shows, music and dancing in the show
lounge or the disco, or just take advantage of being away from work
to relax. |
| Tuesday, December 7 - Mazatlan, Mexico |
This
incomparable port city is one of the most important tourist destinations
in the world. Set in a beautiful cove of the Pacific and surrounded
by the Sierra Madre Mountains, Mazatlan lies at about the same latitude
as Hawaii. Mazatlan is Mexico's second largest coastal city with nearly
600,000 inhabitants. It has the largest port facility between Los
Angeles and the Panama Canal, and is home to Latin America's biggest
fleet of commercial shrimp vessels (over 800 boats). Nearly 40 tons
of shrimp are processed each year, making Mazatlan "the shrimp capital
of the world". One of the best things going for Mazatlan is its combination
of affordable comfort and laid-back seaside charm. Its long, wide
sandy beaches with rolling surf are lined with fun open-air bistros
and bars. The sunny beaches clamor with activity. Strolling vendors
hawk their wares, parasails float upward, and sunbathers of all ages
frolick in the blue Pacific. Mazatlan offers something for everyone:
fishing, sailing, surfing, kayaking, birdwatching, golf, tennis, horseback
riding, great dining, shopping, music and entertainment. Whatever
your passion, this is the place. Unlike other vacation destinations
that were developed strictly to lure tourists, Mazatlan is first and
foremost a flourishing Mexican seaport. Here the visitor will experience
the "real Mexico" with its rich cultural heritage and traditions.
Take a stroll around Old Mazatlan (Centro) with its colorful colonial-style
buildings, stopping at an outdoor caf for a fresh "limonada" and some
people-watching. It's a short steep hike up to Cerro de Vigia (Lookout
Hill) above Olas Altas. The view from the top is worth the climb!
Mazatlan has been known for years to big game fisherman worldwide
for the excellent sport fishing here, as evidenced by the number of
sportfishing fleets. Mazatlan is also a base for nearby freshwater
bass fishing tours. Excellent dove, duck, and quail hunting is readily
available in the outlying areas. Mazatlecos welcome tourists with
open arms and warm hospitality, eager to practice their English and
introduce you to their wonderful city on the Gold Coast. |
| Wednesday, December 8 - Puerto Vallarta, Mexico |
 This
beautiful city by the bay has a population of over 300,000 friendly
residents and covers more than 1,200 square kilometers. It's a city
with modern infrastructure and conveniences that has somehow managed
to maintain its unique Old Mexico charm; donkeys are still used for
delivery in many parts of this unique place. Many of the crafts available
here are made by local Indians who have been producing their wares
using the same methods for hundreds of years. Puerto Vallarta has
something special for everyone. There are exciting day trips to the
jungle, relaxing days at the beach, and countless romantic hideaways.
The area offers big-time sport fishing, golf, motorcycling, whale
watching, art, diving, hot air balloons, culture, and surfing. Puerto
Vallarta is completely different from any other destination in Mexico
due to its geographic diversity, boasting mountains, jungles, beaches,
rivers, waterfalls, and much more. This place is yours to savor and
is, without a doubt, one of the friendliest and cleanest beach resorts
in all of Mexico. |
| Thursday, December 9 - Cabo San Lucas, Mexico |
The
sea, sun, and desert join to cast an air of mystery and romance over
all who visit Cabo San Lucas. Located at the southernmost tip of the
magnificent Baja peninsula, Cabo is blessed with the perfect climate.
For years Cabo was the remote playground reserved solely for private
yacht owners. They flocked here to be near "Marlin Alley", as the
waters around Cabo have often been described. The name is well deserved,
as Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed billfish capital of the world.
But Cabo is far from remote these days, and the attraction of this
magical spot is no longer limited to marlin fishing. Cabo can be many
different things to people. Cabo San Lucas has become known as the
perfect vacation spot for the entire family. If golf, water sports,
boating, fishing, ATV's, horseback riding and numerous other activities
are what you seek, they're all here waiting for you. Los Cabos is
home to five world class championship golf courses. Three of these
were designed by Jack Nicklaus, one by Robert Trent Jones II and one
by Pete Dye. Cabo del Sol, a Nicklaus creation, which skirts the shore
of the Sea of Cortez, has been called one of the five most beautiful
courses in the world. |

the globe, the centerpiece of the ms Oosterdam is a magnificent Waterford
crystal globe, prominently displayed in a three-story atrium. First-time cruisers

TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is designed for Physicians, CRNAs, Physician Assistants,
Registered Nurses, and other medical care providers who must maintain state-of-the-art
knowledge of not only the specialty, but also of all additional related disciplines
which may impact it.
PROGRAM PURPOSE
The practitioner of anesthesiology must possess the scientific
background for clinical practice; maintain state-of-the-art knowledge
of not only the specialty but also of all additional, related
disciplines which may impact it; maintain an up-to-the-minute
armamentarium of knowledge and skills for the selection and use
of complex equipment, pharmacologic agents and procedures necessary
for the provision of quality patient care; manage self and colleagues
to function toward common goals in the clinical setting, the clinical
and educational institutions, and the community in which the practice
resides; serve as an expert in matters involving health care delivery;
serve as an informed manager of clinical and educational services provided,
including the acquisition and distribution of resources necessary in
meeting professional goals; and provide assistance with, and support of,
other service providers, departments, institutions and organizations
dependent upon the professional expertise of the practitioner. Presentations
are designed to facilitate the physician, nurse specialist and other
providers maintaining skills of the same kind to review and update
knowledge and abilities in one or more of
these areas vital to the practicing professional.
OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be
able to:
Apply the pertinent physical and behavioral sciences - to include
but not be limited to advanced anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry,
physics, psychology, and social sciences - as they impact and are affected by
the planning, delivery, and monitoring of anesthesia and related services inherent
in the anesthesia professions.
Explain the selection, dosing considerations with methods of administration, safe use, and
contraindications and precautions of presented pharmacological agents through the understanding
of their physico-chemical properties, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, updated uses, and
more recently developed additional, related, and similar drugs.
Outline comprehensive management plans for the group of patients discussed, whether related in
age, physical status, cultural background, invasive procedure, anesthetic or analgesic
requirements, clinical setting, adverse reactions, and/or goals of care.
Apply the principles of safety and asepsis in the performance of anesthetic procedures and
administrations, equipment use, and other applications encountered during the provision of
anesthesia and analgesia whether in the surgical unit, the labor and delivery suite, the pain
management clinic, or other more remote location of anesthetizing services.
Incorporate the appropriate recommendations and/or requirements of pertinent external
organizations, institutions, and professional groups - recognized as serving as the authority for
and/or holding the responsibility to compile and approve such tenets - in the provision of
anesthesia and related services, whether medical, legal, philosophical, ethical, or health care
management standards.
Apply the new techniques in the clinical setting of the participant.
